Maya Gupta is a survivor. After escaping an impending arranged marriage in India as a teenager, she has thrived in America. But now she faces her greatest challenge yet - cancer has invaded her life, and unless she finds a way to participate in a clinical trial in Washington, DC, this may be one battle she loses. When Maya's best friend Kari offers Maya the lifeline of a place to stay - her brother's currently vacant DC apartment - the young woman eagerly accepts and goes to meet her fate....
Ben Evans's plans have changed, and he's heading home for some much needed rest and relaxation during his offseason in the major leagues. Upon arriving at his DC apartment, however, Ben is shocked to find Maya - his sister's friend, who he hardly knows - in residence. He soon finds himself trapped between protecting his above reproach reputation and searching for a way to help a woman he is coming to admire. When Maya's fight to survive her disease becomes more complicated than ever, she and Ben scheme an extreme solution to her predicament that tests to what lengths they're willing to go together to save Maya's life.

I love most of the books by Abramson. From the start I knew this one was not like her others. That simple fact makes this one so enjoyable. She is not writing a story about things we as readers already know. Everything is new and fresh, and why I loved reading this story. You know that a story is a winner when you reach the end not wanting to leave the new friends you have just met. When you start rereading parts right away so that it does not need to end. When you walk away thinking about what might happen next even though the author has no more words to say. This book is worth the time spent reading it.Product details

Chances Are (Audible Audio Edition) Traci Hunter Abramson Luone Ingram Covenant Books Reviews
I always have a hard time when it comes to reviews but I would like to tell anyone that is thinking of reading this -- that I loved this book! I won't go into detail as to ruin it but for one thing, it will give your emotions a run for the money if you choose to read CHANCES ARE!
I really enjoyed reading a book that wasn't loaded with sex, swearing or cheating. There was a plausible story line, it was fun, clean with just enough intrigue tossed in. It makes me want to find others by the same author.
I have enjoyed every one of Traci Hunter Abramson's books! Some are set in a world of intrigue or suspense. This one has a different kind of heart pounding suspense as we follow the fight for life through cancer. The characters are real and with depth. It doesn't take long to feel empathy for several of the characters.
I loved everything about this story!
The plot thickens with every page turn. The dialogue was engaging. The characters came alive with each scene. The plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat and the ending was so sweet! It was the tender way that the love story between Ben and Maya blossomed that truly won my heart!
If I could give this book more than five stars, I would!
Maya has thrived in America even after the death of her grandmother, but then told she has cancer while in college and needs treatment. Maya's friend has a plan to get her to a place where she can be treated, helps her settle into her brothers apartment to be near cancer treatment then leaves her to go back to school. The brother returns home to find Maya in his apartment and asks her to leave to protect his reputation not knowing her story. Maya has a difficult life being left alone with no family to help, no ability to work and provide for herself but she kept going. When Ben realizes the situation with Maya's insurance and knows Maya doesn't have long to live he comes up with a plan. This story is very different from the other books I've read by Traci, and deals with real life and a disease that kills every day. Good ending.
Abramson strays from her usual novel format as there are no terrorists, CIA, Navy Seals, etc. There is also no overt religiousity, just a few mentions of Christianity, having faith and praying. Maya is disowned and fighting for her life against a brain tumor. Ben is a major league rookie Baseball player. The story is set in motion by Kari, Ben's sister, who believes Ben will never know her best friend is living in his DC apartment while receiving medical treatment because he's in CA for several months. The plan worked until Ben decided to come home. He was not happy to find his sister's friend living, uninvited, in his place. He pretty much kicks her to the curb and is not aware of her lack of family, lack of a job or money (due to the cancer treatments) or her now homeless status. As he is made aware of Maya's situation, he is understandably angry at having this burden thrust upon him. But he also agrees to step up and help Maya, and by doing so, helps himself. The drama in this story is limited mostly to relationship issues, facing death, and making decisions that affect the future. There are a few curve balls, but mostly this is about two people growing up in the face of death. Both characters are realistically portrayed. It is a clean romance.
Romance, clean, Christian Faith elements
More of a 3.5 for me as a reader, but loved the baseball setting. This was a cute read with the baseball setting, but very serious dealing with Maya's cancer. The misunderstandings, Maya's illness, and of course Kara's trying to get things set up to help her but not quite telling her brother what was really going on. Ben's prompting to marry Maya to solve some of her problems, it all came together for a fun read. The major league baseball setting was fun, and made for an interesting side story. Their fall, was lovely, and loved how their hearts gradually wrapped around each other as they got to know each other better. The prompting would probably be the one thing that might throw off some readers who don't enjoy faith based stories, but it still was a fun, romantic read. Loved how it all came together, Ben's family, the hospital characters were nice background characters for the story as well.
